S E E I EXEMPLIFY. To give a concrete example of your claim, topic, concept or word.

S E E I ILLUSTRATE To create a visual (a symbol, chart, graph or picture) OR To use an analogy or metaphor

ANALOGY & METAPHOR Analogy: (n) a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based: the analogy between the heart and a pump. Metaphor (n) A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in "a sea of troubles“. TERM: CIVILIZATION STATE. To define in your own words. A complex urban culture that can maintain many specialists who provide for the social, economic, political and religious needs of the group.

TERM: CIVILIZATION ELABORATE. To expand on or clarify more fully. In other words, civilizations were groups of people centered in cities who developed specialized labor to serve the diverse needs of the group.

TERM: CIVILIZATION EXEMPLIFY. To give a concrete example. Sumer ca. 3200 BCE is considered a civilization because it grew into a city with a complex social order of rulers, priests, administrators landowners & commoners each with specialized tasks. It also had its own language & writing (cuneiform), architecture (temples) & religious beliefs.

TERM: CIVILIZATION ILLUSTRATE. Visual, analogy or metaphor. “A civilization is like a sports team.” –A team starts with individual players who then are joined by others with similar skills & goals. –Game rules are developed & each member of the team specializes in a skill – quarterback, halfback, offense, defense. –Team members work together for the common good of the team. –Team members identify with their team, develop team loyalty and a willingness to fight for their team. – A special language arises to explain the game. –A special architecture & environment is created for the team.

A civilization is like a sports team. –There are other specialized tasks like coach, manager, captain. The Coach is like a ruler in that he is in charge of the entire team & plans for the common good by exploiting the talents & skills of each member. The manager is like an administrator who assures that the team’s needs are met. A captain is like a priest, a revered leader who motivates the individual members to observe the rules of the game & attain the team’s goals.
