1 Aim: How did Fundamentalism & the Scopes Monkey Trial exemplify the politics of the 1920’s? Do Now: Copy Vocabulary 1.Fundamentalism: protestant movement based on literal (exact) interpretation of the Bible. 2.Evolution: theory advanced by Charles Darwin- a theory stating that plant and animal species had developed and changed over millions of years. Also claimed humans had evolved from apes. 3.Scopes Monkey Trial: Dispute over the role of science and religion in public schools

2 Activity #1 Read Textbook- A Civic Biology and answer the 2 questions below: It shall be unlawful for any teacher…to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals. 1.How does this textbook explain where man came from? 2.Why might people in Tennessee in 1925 have wanted to outlaw this textbook?

4 Activity #3 Divide into groups of 4 Each group member is responsible for (1) document Answer the questions that follow the document When every group member finishes their document, as a group discuss where on the graphic organizer their document belongs (Supported Butler Amendment or Opposed the Butler Amendment)

5 Outcome of the Case Scopes lost the case and was fined $100. His attorney later appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court, which threw out his conviction on a technicality
