4 Opportunity – Unpaid Internship Program Students –Internships demonstrate ambition –Skills beyond classroom –Exposure to fields of interest –“A foot in the door” State –Keeps the talent pipeline open –Find the “gems in the rough” –Provides experience to employees in a supervising/mentoring role

5 Solution Arizona Interns in Action –Only four state agencies had an intern program –Statewide program benefits all agencies –Agencies need the best and the brightest

13 Results Over 143 students have been placed in unpaid internships since January 2010 –Average Satisfaction – Exceeds Expectations Nine interns placed in full time employment –State is still under a hiring freeze

14 Results 20 agencies participated in the program –Average Satisfaction – Exceeds Expectations Now 32 agencies participating School partners include: –Arizona State University –University of Arizona –Northern Arizona University –Grand Canyon University –Maricopa Community College –DeVry/Keller –Phoenix School of Law –Brigham Young University –Kaplan University –Carrington College

15 Future Retirement Boom is Coming Percentage of Separations Due to Retirement Twenty-one of the state’s largest agencies are expected to have at least 30% of their workforce eligible to retire in the next 5 years…

17 Final Thoughts States need to be competitive in the looming talent war –Internship programs foster partnerships with a prime source of new talent –Careers in the public sector provide meaningful work –Arizona is developing and expanding our reputation as an employer of choice
