2 BENEFITS OF AN INTERNSHIP EXPLORE A CAREER Apply knowledge and skills you learn at school---- See the relevance of what you are learning at school and how it applies to the work place Learn work skills and “soft skills” (people and character skills) “Network” for future job opportunities

3 BASIC GUIDELINES FOR YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

4 BE RESPONSIBLE 1. Be on Time. 2. Call the internship site if you are sick or unable to attend- Always communicate so that the site knows what to expect 3. Do your best work at the internship site

5 Be a Positive Self Starter- Show Initiative Project a positive attitude Be enthusiastic about learning. Ask questions and show an interest in what you are doing If you finish a job, look around to see what else needs to be done Don’t wait to be told everything to do

6 Be a Communicator Ask questions if you don’t understand Let the workplace know about some of your specific work skills Let the internship site know what you want to learn at the site Let me know if you have any problems or concerns with your internship

7 ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST WORK (Remember...You are learning work skills and opening the doors to future career opportunities)

8 REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE REPRESENTING MURRAY HIGH SCHOOL ( Don’t wreck a site so that KHS students won’t be invited back!!!)

9 LIABILITY ISSUES

10 IF YOU ARE INJURED WHILE ON YOUR INTERNSHIP TELL YOUR WORKSITE SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY CALL AND TELL ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

11 IF YOUR INJURY REQUIRES MEDICAL ATTENTION: IF YOU ARE AN UNPAID INTERN: You are covered by the Granite School District’s Worker’s Compensation Fund IF YOU ARE AN UNPAID INTERN: You are covered by the Granite School District’s Worker’s Compensation Fund YOU NEED TO BE TREATED AT ONE OF THE FACILITIES LISTED ON THE LIABILITY CARD

12 If you seek medical treatment somewhere other than a facility listed on the card, the district’s insurance policy WILL NOT COVER THE EXPENSES. You will need to pay for them yourself.

13 If you are a PAID INTERN and are injured on the job: Inform your work supervisor immediately Ask supervisor about procedure for seeking medical help You will be covered under your employers insurance coverage Call and let me know ASAP

14 EVALUATION: You will be evaluated at the end of each term by your worksite supervisor

16 Critical Work Skills Class INFORM YOUR WORKPLACE THAT THEY MAY NOT SCHEDULE YOU TO WORK DURING CLASS TIME CLASS ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. You will earn up to 15 participation points each week that you attend (journal write) This cannot be made up.

18 Time sheets need to be signed by work supervisor!!!! Don’t forget 

19 Time sheets and journal entries need to be turned in on time! ( 5 pts. Deducted for each day late)

26 MATH SKILLS (Did you know that some top companies find it necessary to offer remedial math classes for their employees just so they can perform simple math tasks on the job??)

29 CLASS RULES: Mutual respect for others in class Positive learning environment (No disruptive behavior) No food or drink Consistent class attendance (Do not schedule doctor’s or orthodontic appointments during class)

30 CLASS JOURNAL: Pick up your journal write as you come into class Turn in after roll is called (pass to front of row) You will receive 15 participation points for each journal write. These can’t be made up.

31 HOMEWORK

32 HOMEWORK IS DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH CLASS Any homework handed in after homework is called for will be considered late– 20% deduction

33 Second week late= 50% deduction Homework due before midterm will not be accepted after midterm

34 If you are absent from class, how do you pick up the homework??

35 PICK UP MISSED WORK IN THE CAREER CENTER It will be in 3 ring binder ~Make sure you pick up all assignments and handouts.

36 IF YOU ARE ABSENT: PICK UP WORK MISSED THE DAY YOU COME BACK TO SCHOOL DON’T WAIT UNTIL CLASS TO PICK UP THE MISSED WORK– IT WILL BE COUNTED LATE!! MISSED WORK WILL BE DUE ON ITS REGULAR DUE DATE—Usually the next class

37 Internship Placement: If you have questions about your placement, please see me after class

38 Before the end of class today: All students need to be oriented on the points contained on the student orientation sheet. Sign and turn in at end of class

39 Murray Chamber of Commerce Student Intern of the Month Each month a student intern will be honored at the Murray Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon Students chosen on merit: Performance at internship site Performance at internship site Outstanding character traits Quality of internship experience Quality of internship experience Academic performance Academic performance

40 If you are absent from class, when do you pick up homework? Answer: The day you return to school. (Don’t wait until the following class)

41 Should you miss class for a doctors or orthodontist appointment? No. Schedule these visits on a day other than class. We only meet ONCE A WEEK

42 Where do you pick up homework if you miss class? Answer: The Career Center Bookcase as you walk in the door (second book case) (Make sure you get all assignments and handouts)

43 Is homework that is due before midterm accepted after midterm? NO

44 If time sheets are late, how much are they deducted? Five points per day

45 If you are an unpaid intern, and are injured at the internship site, what do you do? 1. Tell your work site supervisor 2. Seek medical help at one of the places listed on your pink card 3. Tell me asap
