What is Education? Working in small groups attempt to define the word education. Put your thoughts on post it notes on the flip chart paper provided Be prepared to share these thoughts and ideas with the other groups.

Defining Education Defining education requires you to consider the following questions Is education a process, product or system? Who is education for ? Who determines parameters ? What is the purpose of education?

Where does learning happen? Working independently identify – 4 places where learning could take place What do these places look like? What sounds do you hear? What can you smell? How does it feel to learning here? Now share this with your group

Value of EBC EBtC is widely recognised as a means of encouraging a number of desirable educational outcomes and assuring the realisation of current policy agendas. Ofsted suggested that ‘outdoor education gives depth to curriculum and contributes to students’ physical, personal and social education’ (Ofsted, 2004).

Why have educational visits? Think about your own experiences and decide upon two positive experiences of school trips – a)Discuss a visit you attended whilst a pupil at school b)Discuss a visit you attended as a member of staff or parent What made these trips positive and memorable?

Why Have Educational Visits? To develop knowledge To develop skills To extend experience As a reward To celebrate eg the end of term / a festival Extra-curricular enhancement

How Often? Reward / treat / celebration? Occasionally enhancement of curriculum or extra-curricula provision On-going Integral to school planning, written into curriculum / extra- curricula plans Frequent school planning with offsite provision seen as integral eg San Diego ‘school in the park’

Establish Groups Organise yourself into groups of 4 or 5 (no more or less).

Establish Groups Find the following 4 objects in 15 minutes: Comb\brush A relevant text book A journal\magazine on Art Selfie with someone aged over 40 OR You have all be stranded on a desert island: What 3 skills will be the most important? (does anyone in the group have these skills?) What 3 objects do you want to scavenge?

When to go, where to go, who to take and how to get there. Learning through Educational Visits What do you need to plan for?

When to go? When? during school term during school holidays at the weekend For how long ? – within the school day day trip longer than the school day residential, more than one day When during the school year? when a specific topic is being taught at the start of year (induction) end of term (celebration / reward/) when the weather is good

Where to go? Local, national or international? Considerations Cost Expanding horizons Can pupils replicate trip? Have they been there before? Passports Language issues

Who to take? How many staff? Which staff? How many pupils? Which pupils? Any other helpers? Adults or older pupils?

How to get there? Public transport bus, Train, Ferry, Plane School transport Minibus or local authority bus Hired transport coach, charter train or plane Considerations – cost, safety, travel sickness, flexibility of timing

Make a plan Where to go How to go there What will it cost? Risk assessment Who do you need to inform? Administration planning (documentation) Plan your time What should you take with you? How many staff do you need? What are the learning outcomes?

Follow up activity Individually: Write a 200 word reflection on ‘School in the Park’ Post this on the forum in MOODLE In your Group: Consider which group of learners you are going to take on a trip. Where you would like to take them Meet at 9am next Thursday as a group to sketch out ideas.
