Building the Foundation ASCA RecommendsApplication Analyze school and student data Identify current strengths and areas for improvement Dicuss beliefs about student learning Write philosophy, mission statement, standards, competencies, and indicators Determine program priorities Assign standards and competencies to grade levels Review data: student achievement, guidance- related, attendance, discipline, etc. (grade level & sub groups) Individual assessment Individual & department discussion Create departmental statements Use a tiered services system Based on grade level data, determine tier I needs

Designing the Delivery System ASCA RecommendsApplication Determine time allotments for each component Develop action plans Identify the guidance curriculum to be used Determine the data that will be collected Decide which counselors will perform which activities Rally administrative support Consider # of students need activity Utilize the Guidance Curriculum Action Plan Always use research-based curriculum Ask: How will I determine the effectiveness of the activity Determine which counselor will facilitate the activity Include administrators whenever possible or meet prior to discuss the activity, goals, & expected outcomes

Setting up the School Counseling Program (Management) ASCA RecommendsApplication Establish a program budget Ensure the following preconditions are met: equal access, adequate budget/resources, collaborative effort, administrative support, state leadership/technical support. Complete management agreement forms Meet with administrators to discuss funding for special activities. Have your completed management agreement forms, Guidance Curriculum Action Plan, and Closing the Gap Action Plan available for referencing Be sure to discuss how the program will meet the needs of all students (link to data)

Working the School Counseling Program (Management) ASCA RecommendsApplication Develop a master planning calendar Set time allocations Develop weekly and monthly planning calendars Implement curriculum activities at each grade level Develop at least one closing- the-gap activity Use the yearly calendar to identify major tasks or tasks with deadlines i.e. credit checks, IPDP, update 504 plans Select dates to complete major tasks Create a monthly calendar (optional) Create a weekly calendar to post outside of your door (email to Administrators and your assigned team of teachers) Use daily contact logs Create a weekly activity graph (share with Administration) Use parent contact log Update Accountability Binder weekly

Promoting the School Counseling Program (Advocacy) ASCA RecommendsApplication Develop a program brochure Present the program to school staff Present the program to the school board for official approval Develop a Web site Brochures, Newsletters, Counselor Blogs, etc. are creative ways to advertise your counseling services, activities, and events.
