Literature Circles can be defined as "In literature circles, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students' response to what they have read. You may hear talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story." Schlick Noe, K. L. & Johnson. N.L., Getting Started with Literature Circles, 1999 Christopher-Gordon Publishers, Inc. p. ix. The purpose of Literature Circles can be: "Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the heart of this approach. Students reshape and add onto their understanding as they construct meaning with other readers. Finally, literature circles guide students to deeper understanding of what they read through structured discussion and extended written and artistic response." Schlick Noe, K. L. & Johnson. N.L., Getting Started with Literature Circles, 1999 Christopher-Gordon Publishers, Inc. p. ix.

Each group has been provided a binder The binder consists of everything you will need; these are for each of my classes, so do not mess them up, please. You are responsible for setting up a reading schedule, choosing tasks for your first meeting, and preparing your section BEFORE the meeting. You will score yourself at least ONE TIME, and you will score your group mates at least ONE time during the Literature Circle process.

Description of each of the roles Reading schedule – you each get one. Tasks and scoring guide – these must remain in the binder, but there is enough for each member to read their own. Individual score sheet, to be used at a later date Copies of all the task sheets for all 4 meetings – all FIVE tasks need to be complete for each Lit Circle Meeting; therefore, if you have 4 group members... You will each need to complete at least 5 out of the 6 tasks by the end of the unit; most group members will have completed all 6 tasks by the end. How will I be scoring?
