ClearWater Tech LLC EcoTex - Advanced Laundry Oxidation Systems Ozone Laundry Methodology
2
Overview Type of Methods Theory of Operation Methodology Schematic Advantages and Disadvantages
3
Ozone Laundry Methods Recirculation Injection System (RI) Direct Water Injection System (DWI) Ozone Charge System (OC) Ozone Diffusion System (OD)
4
Recirculation Injection System (RI) Theory of Operation To recirculate wash water, from the washer though an ozone system and back to the washer Ozone process oxidizes and sanitizes recirculated water and delivers dissolved ozonated water back to wash drum Ozone recirculation takes place during each step of the wash cycle Water is sent to drain after every step Dissolved ozone or ORP monitors maybe used to indicate ozone’s transfer to the water
5
Recirculation Injection System - continued
6
Advantages Continuous ozone injection to the washer in every step of the wash cycle Direct ozone contact with linen Beneficial disinfection Single ozone system for all washers Reduces; hot water, energy, chemicals, total water, time …??? Disadvantages Large footprint (typically floor mounted components) Complex installation - Plumbing, contact tank, pump electrical, etc. Maintenance - Daily cleaning of filter Higher concentrations could cause a bleaching effect High capital cost - long payback period
7
Direct Injection System (DI) Theory of Operation With the use of a venturi, the water is directly ozonated prior to entering the washer, to dissolve the ozone gas into the water As the fill valve opens water flow is initiated, creating vacuum at the venturi, drawing in ozone gas Some methods also use a contact tank Once the washer achieves water fill capacity, fill valve closes interrupting vacuum and ozone production Ozone enters the wash drum only upon each water fill step Dissolved ozone or ORP monitor maybe used to indicate ozone’s transfer to the water
8
Direct Injection System - continued
9
Advantages Smaller footprint than RI method Can be wall mounted (contact tank maybe floor mounted) Direct ozone contact with linen Less expensive than RI method ORP and O3 PPM monitors to confirm ozone’s transfer Single ozone system for all washers Reduces; hot water, energy, chemicals, over-all water, time…??? Disadvantages Complex installation - plumbing, contact tank electrical, etc. Single pass ozone injection and contacting Does not provide continuous ozone induction throughout wash step (only on fill) Capital costs can increase payback period Increased Maintenance - pumps, plumbing leaks, controllers, etc. Potential of uncontrolled ozone off-gas from washer Ozone does not remain in solution
10
Ozone Charge System (OC) Theory of Operation Same theory as DWI systems, delivers ozonated water only on fill, but allows for recirculation of water to increase ORP or dissolved ozone level May use a single ozone system for multiple washers May utilize a pressurized or atmospheric tank (atmospheric systems require re pressurization) As the fill valve opens water flow is initiated, creating vacuum at the venturi, drawing in ozone gas Once the washer achieves water fill capacity, fill valve closes interrupting vacuum and ozone production Dissolved ozone or ORP monitor maybe used to indicate ozone’s transfer to the water
11
Ozone Charge System - continued Pressurized Tank
12
Ozone Charge System - continued Atmospheric Tank
13
Ozone Charge System - continued Advantages Can be a smaller foot print than the RI method Wall mountable system (contact tank may or may not be wall mountable) Less up front cost than RI method Multi-pass ozone injection prior to washer ORP and O3 PPM monitors to confirm ozone’s transfer Single ozone system for all washers Reduces; hot water, energy, chemicals, over-all water, time...??? Disadvantages Complex installation - Plumbing, electrical, etc. Does not provide continuous ozone induction throughout wash step (only on fill) Higher concentrations could cause a bleaching effect High capital costs will increase payback period Increased Maintenance - pumps, plumbing leaks, controllers, etc. Potential uncontrolled ozone off gas from washer Ozone does not remain in solution
14
Ozone Diffusion System (OD) Theory of Operation To inject gaseous ozone into washer sump during each step of the wash cycle Ozone oxidizes and sanitizes the contaminants in the water and linen in the washer Some ozone is dissolved into the water, however most of the ozone is used is gaseous phase, as the linen fold into the gas A signal from the washer controls ozone’s On and Off time, may be programmed by the washer’s PLC
15
Ozone Diffusion System - continued
16
Ozone Diffusion System - Continued Advantages Continuous ozone injection in every step of the wash cycle Direct ozone contact with linen Increased contact time of ozone in washer, insures microbe kill Easy installation - NO added plumbing, contact tanks, water filters, etc. Low capital cost - short payback period 8 to 18 months Small footprint (typically wall mounted components) Reduces; hot water, energy, chemicals, over-all water, time Disadvantages Systems that are not accurately sized and installed can create ambient ozone issues.
