4 How to know if SRM permit required? If plant receives or transports SRM. If plant receives or transports SRM. Discuss. Discuss.

5 Cut/Wraps Jurisdictional issues. Jurisdictional issues. If receive OTM carcasses then need a permit. If receive OTM carcasses then need a permit. Where will their SRM go for disposal? Where will their SRM go for disposal?

6 Disposal Options Pick up for rendering – limited Pick up for rendering – limited Permitted landfill – some regions Permitted landfill – some regions On site disposal – only if allowed by provincial/municipal bodies. Allowed for some facilities – cut/wraps, vet clinics or if slaughter facility only slaughters live. On site disposal – only if allowed by provincial/municipal bodies. 7 Non – contiguous policy Designed as an option for disposal if no other solutions – Maritimes. Designed as an option for disposal if no other solutions – Maritimes. Very similar requirements to those of naturally contained landfills – ie soil porosity must be very low. 8 Natural Landfill for Dummies (Non- contiguous premises) 1.Separation – adequate measures (distance, fencing etc) must be used to prevent the access of domestic ruminants to SRM. Visitors should be restricted and logged. 1.Separation – adequate measures (distance, fencing etc) must be used to prevent the access of domestic ruminants to SRM. The soil in the specific area may be adequate. Resources are available which document the soil types and hydraulic conductivity of the soil in various places in Canada. Check with provincial Ministry of Environment staff to find these data. 2.Bottom of the pit – must be constructed from materials eg. soil / clay etc with a hydraulic conductivity 1 x 10 -6 cm/s. 9 Compost Not attractive in BC? Not attractive in BC? Likely doesn’t reduce potential infectivity by much but is convenient, buys time (reduces urgency of disposal) Likely doesn’t reduce potential infectivity by much but is convenient, buys time (reduces urgency of disposal) Must find suitable site for application – no ruminant exposure (wild/domestic) Must find suitable site for application – no ruminant exposure (wild/domestic) Still considered SRM Still considered SRM

10 Emergencies Ideally meet criteria for disease containment as well as SRM disposal Ideally meet criteria for disease containment as well as SRM disposal Incineration good option if mobile Incineration good option if mobile
