Does Mr. Rochester hold any power or authority over Jane? Yes! He is her boss man. “…with Master- Mr. Rochester- he has just arrived.”

What is the source of power or authority? – Is it assigned by social convention, assumed by the individual, granted by Jane herself, etc. The source of power is assumed by social convention and Jane herself.

What is the nature of this power of authority? – Benevolent, tyrannical, nurturing The power of authority is good natured.

How does this character wield his or her power or authority over Jane? By him being her boss, buying her clothes (hanging above her head) & housing her.

How does Jane react to Rochester’s exercise of power or authority? Jane tries to become equal with him. By leaving him and coming back when she has money. “ ‘ I do love you’, I said ‘more than ever, but I must not show or indulge the feeling; and this is the last time I must express it’ “ (350).
