Failure of Materials in Service
3
What is Failure? How is it defined?
4
Is this failure?
5
What about this?
6
Or this?
7
Familiar Failure Conventional tensile failure mode that we are all familiar with.
8
Brittle Fracture
9
Ductile Fracture
10
Failure in Compression
11
Failure in Torsion
12
Failure in Bending
13
Stiff stuff getting bent!
14
Failure in little bits!
15
Sneaky failure
16
Fatigue Failure
17
Quietly in the hidden places failure
18
You would not be worrying about this failure at the time it occurred!
19
Will you ever fly in a plane again!
20
Bolting the door after the …..
21
Expensive can-opener!
22
A new slant on bird ingestion
23
Where did that runway go?
24
Brake failure or pilot error?
25
Pardon me sir!
26
This was frozen when I took off!
27
A watery grave
28
Why Failure? All unanticipated mechanical failures must have a cause: Designed incorrectly Manufactured incorrectly Mis-maintained Mis-operated
29
Typical modes of failure tensile, compressive & shear bending (buckling) distortion, residual loads. creep (temperature / stress related) thermal shock corrosion (including stress corrosion) ageing wear, fretting fatigue And lastly, cracks in the fuselage!
