Production Technology in Wool Sheep Management Dr Louis du Pisani

HOW DID THE MAIZE INDUSTRY ACHIEVE THIS?  Adopted & embraced improved production technology  Improved cultivars (Genetics & Bio-technology)  Precision farming (GPS technology)  Conservation tillage (No-till technology)  New generation fertilizers  New generation irrigation systems  Produce more maize, on less land, at lower cost and with less damage to the environment

DID THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY STAY BEHIND IN TERMS OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT? NO

IMPROVED PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY FOR THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY  NUTRITION (bypass protein, flush feeding, creep feeding, injectable nutrients, precision & strategic feeding, ram feeding, etc.)  REPRODUCTION (artificial insemination or AI, synchronising ovulation, super ovulation, pregnancy testing, testing of rams for fertility & mating ability, preparing rams before mating, lambing pens & paddocks, accelerated breeding schemes, etc.)  ANIMAL HEALTH (Famacha, faecal egg counts, selection against internal parasites, testing for parasite resistance, etc.

IMPROVED PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY FOR THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY  GRAZING & PASTURES (grazing management, improved pasture cultivars, no-till planting etc.)  BREEDING & SELECTION (ewe selection techniques, “wet&dry”, BLUP, Genomics, progeny testing, etc.)  FLOCK MANAGEMENT (electronic ear tags, automatic scales, computerized management programmes, etc.)  SHEARING (shearing platforms & other shearing facilities, machine shearing, etc.)  RECORD KEEPING & DATA ANALYSIS  PREDATOR MANAGEMENT

BUT, THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IS SLOWER IN ACCEPTING & ADOPTING NEW TECHNOLOGY  WHY?  Not aware of it  Too costly  Too complicated or cumbersome  Not trusted
