There were different rules for African Americans and White Americans, African Americans had to pay an extra tax just to vote

In 1963 there were many events in the civil rights movement that took place in Birmingham, Alabama to try and correct this unfair separation of people and services Martin Luther King being arrested for civil protest at a lunch counter

Police officers used Dogs to deter protesting civil rights activists in Birmingham

The police even used fire hoses to deter the protesters in birmingham

How slideshow can be used: I have used this slide show to help students gain background knowledge and perspective before reading the Watsons go to Birmingham– 1963 I can also use this slideshow as a part of a lesson on the civil rights movement as a way to solicit a class conversation
