What is Confined Masonry
Confined masonry construction consists of masonry wall and horizontal and vertical RC confining members built on four side of masonry wall. Vertical members called as tie column or practical column resemble to RC frame construction. Horizontal element are called as tie beam resemble to beam in RC frame construction.

What will happen in an Earthquake if it is not confined
11
How Confined Masonry Resist Earth quake
Under earthquake quake shaking, the masonry acts as compressive diagonal struts and the RCC confining element act as tension and compression member. The RCC element grip the whole width of the wall at the door and window opening and prevent damage of wall.

Performance of Confined Masonry Building in Past Earthquake
Low rise ( one to two) storey confined masonry Building have performing very well in Latin America in recent earthquakes. Confined masonry performed well in EL Salvador Earthquake of January 13 and February 13,2001 (Magnitude 7.7 and 6.6). 90% of the building constructed with confined masonry did not collapse.
