3 Project One Sihanouk Hospital in Phnom Penh 3 Free acute care for adults and infectious disease victims. Open since 1996 with an annual budget of $3 million USD. 50% of budget is grants from Global Fund and USAID. Other 50% of budget is from a single donor in Japan. The Challenge: Making the hospital less dependent on its single donor.

5 Project One Sihanouk Hospital in Phnom Penh 5 The plan was to make the Sihanouk Hospital financially sustainable by opening several for-profit medical centers around the city of Phnom Penh. $ $ Sihanouk Hospital

6 Project One Sihanouk Hospital in Phnom Penh 6 2009 First medical center becomes profitable. 2010-2011 Four different medical centers opened. January 1, 2013 New Medical Centers reach $3 million USD in revenue, with nearly $1 million USD in profit. Hospital no longer requires unrestricted funding from outside of Cambodia.

7 7 The Handa Foundation (THF) is an NGO registered in both the U.S. and the U.K. It is non-religious, non-political, and created to build sustainable hospitals and schools in SE Asia. It was founded in 2012 by a generous Japanese philanthropist named Dr. Haruhisa Handa. It also helps to manage existing projects such as a university, a nursing school, several hospitals, a rehabilitation center, an orphanage and projects for the Cambodian Red Cross.

8 Project Two Emergency Hospital in Battambang 8 109-bed free trauma center for land- mine and road accident victims. Only center for complex trauma in Northwest Cambodia. Open since 1998 with an annual budget of $1.3 million USD. 100% of funding from an NGO in Italy called Emergency which is no longer able to provide funding. The Challenge: Making the hospital less dependent on foreign funding.

9 Project Two Emergency Hospital in Battambang 9 The plan is to make the Emergency Hospital financially sustainable by adding a sliding scale, and by opening several for-profit businesses in Cambodia. $ $ Emergency Hospital

11 Project Two Emergency Hospital in Battambang 11 February 2012 Hospital loses funding and new donor enters. April 2012 Sliding scale added, 65% of patients are still free. June 2012 For-profit medical center for chronic care opened. Security products business opened in Phnom Penh. January 2013 Land for a commercial farm purchased. June 2013 Hospital 60% sustainable so far, and will be 80% by end of year.
