1
Anglo & Mexican Perspectives
2
Language
3
Religion Other Christian Religions; Protestant; ex. Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc. Catholic; historically already a big part of Mexican culture
4
Slavery Yes. Would have supported it; came from a country where it was a part of life. No. Wouldn’t have supported it. Mexico was beginning to end slavery in 1829.
5
Federalists Government Came from the U.S. where Federal government has power & state government has power- they would’ve liked this type of Government Would’ve most likely enjoyed the powers the individual states would have.
6
Centralists Government Both would’ve most likely not enjoyed this type of government due to a lack of power from the individual states.
7
Mexican Constitution of 1824 Both would’ve enjoyed the Constitution due to the establishment of law and order. Anglos only reserve; lack of representation in Coahuila y Tejas state Government.
8
Only religion allowed- Catholic Most likely find it odd; most came from the U.S. where the 1 st amendment protected freedom of religion. Would be used to it- Catholic went many family generations back.
9
Colonization Laws of 1825 Would’ve loved the law- gave very generous terms to come and live in Texas; some might not want to become Mexican citizens. Some may have taken advantage of the generous land grants to live in Texas.
10
Captial at Saltillo 500 miles away Have a problem with; came from a country that usually puts the capital in the middle of the state. Too long to get to from Texas. Most likely would have a problem with the amount of time to do official business in Saltillo.
11
Texas allowed 1 member representative. Coahuila- 11 Both Anglos & Tejano’s would’ve not liked the lack of political representation for Texas. Coahuila’s population was almost all Mexican and little to no Anglo pop.
12
Colonization Law of 1825- settlers wouldn’t pay taxes for 10 years Since most of the settlers coming were Anglo; it might not have applied to a lot; might not like that Mexican government is so generous to Anglo settlers. Would’ve loved it.
13
Fedonia Revolt Both groups by overwhelming majority did not support the Fredonia Revolt
14
Manuel Meir y Teran’s Report to Mexico City Hated it May have enjoyed the new restrictions applied to Anglos. Leaving more land grants & financial assistance to Mexicans.
15
April 6 th 1830 Hated it; Written by a Centralists government; felt betrayed by Mexican government May have enjoyed the new restrictions applied to Anglos. Leaving more land grants & financial assistance to Mexicans. May be good for the country.
16
Turtle Bayou Resolutions Hoped for better relations with Mexico. Express loyalty to Santa Anna & Mex. Const. of 1824 Gringos should not shoot at the soldiers
17
Stephen F. Austin arrested Upset; came from a country where freedom of speech was protected under the 1 st amendment. Gringos should watch what they write about the Government.
