Why Rock Dust?

This is the reason to rock dust!

Rock dusting is the primary means of defense against coal dust explosions.

Generous applications of rock dust can prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. The chance of propagation and risk of widespread explosion disasters in bituminous coal mines can be nearly eliminated when rock dust is applied liberally and maintained properly. However, unless rock dusting is appropriately and properly maintained, it will almost surely fail in an emergency.

30CFR Part 75 Requires Where rock dust is required to be applied, it shall be distributed upon the top, floor, and sides of all underground areas of a coal mine and maintained in such quantities that the incombustible content of the combined coal dust, rock dust, and other dust shall be not less than 80 percent. Where methane is present in any ventilating current, the percent of incombustible content of such combined dust shall be increased 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent of methane.

Recent studies have shown that rock dust must be applied to maintain the incombustible content of dust in all entries to no less than 80 percent. MSHA has promulgated an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) that requires no less than 80 percent incombustible content of dust in all accessible areas of underground bituminous coal mines. In addition, where methane is present, the ETS requires a 0.4 percent increase in the incombustible content for each 0.1 percent of methane.

Rock Dust Samples MSHA collects rock dust surveys as mining advances. MSHA also collects rock dust spot surveys as needed. Samples can be: – Band – Roof & Rib – Rib, Roof or Floor only

Float coal dust on the ribs, roof, and other elevated surfaces (overhead dust) can be dispersed much more readily by an explosion than dust on the floor. If the overhead dust is mainly float coal dust, the explosion hazard is increased. If the overhead dust is primarily rock dust, the explosion hazard is reduced. Thick layers of rock dust on the floor cannot compensate for float coal dust on overhead surfaces.

Studies also show that a layer of pulverized float coal dust as little as 5/1000 inch thick (about the thickness of a sheet of paper) deposited on top of a rock dusted surface can propagate an explosion.

High rate production systems result in more advancement each shift requiring rockdusting in face areas during the operating shift. 30 CFR 75.402 requires rockdust to within 40 feet of all working faces. A system should be designed that can allow the rapid application of rock dust during the mining and roof bolting cycle. Design a system that requires less manual tasks such a rock dust bag handling. Remember material handling still accounts for the second most number of accidents, ranking only behind reportable roof falls.

Prevention is the cure Have an effective clean up program. Maintain effective ventilation and dust controls. Apply rock dust liberally. Maintain equipment in permissible condition. Conduct workplace examinations and gas tests. Remain vigilant.
