Jaime McMurtry Why this topic? For the past two semesters, I have been a Promotions intern at Entercom Communications. I plan to share information with you about Promotions, including what a job or internship in Promotions would entail. Most of my research has been from Mediathink.com in an article titled “A User’s Guide to Radio Promotions”. Other information is from experience! www.985krz.com www.froggy101.com www.wilknewsradio.com www.102themountain.com

Jaime McMurtry Promotions Promotions are a great way to get across a message without coming off like a commercial. They are creative and are targeted for specific audiences. Allow a radio station to stand out from the crowd. They are formatted to both please the client included in the promotion and sure to receive a positive reaction from listeners.

Jaime McMurtry Setting up a promotion.. Ask yourself the what, why, when, who and how What is the promotion? Why would the station and the client want to do the promotion? When is a good time to do this promotion? Who is involved? How could we make this promotion happen?

Jaime McMurtry Who pays for all of this? You often hear radio stations giving away gift certificates, trips, concert tickets etc. This stuff isn’t cheap! A promotional proposal is sent to a client, sometimes several clients, explaining the promotion and what it would entail A proposal basically asks the client to pay for all or most of the promotion and lists what they would receive in return

Jaime McMurtry Why would the client want to do the promotion? Their name is attached to the promotion. Station website will display their logo On-air DJ’s will mention their business each time the promotion is spoken about Gets them remembered

Jaime McMurtry A Good Promotion.. Is easy to get involved with! People don’t want to spend tons of time reading the rules of a promotion They want the details of when it is, where it is, how to win or get involved etc.

Jaime McMurtry In Conclusion… Working in Promotions is fun It allows you to be creative It allows you to form relationships with clients and listeners You receive great perks!
