2 WWW.SPIRE2030.EU 2 CENTRE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES AND SAVING (CRES) WIND Resource assessment and wind farm performance in complex terrain RTD&D on large wind turbines and farms (wakes) Advanced measuring systems, including remote sensing Increasing interest for deep offshore applications (including floating WT) BIOMASS Bioenergy chains/bio refinery including logistics and end-use Biofuels for transport, emphasis on feedstocks, techno-economics, EA/LCA Increasing interest for thermochemical conversion techs (gasification, etc) GEOTHERMAL Ground-source systems, low & medium enthalpy geothermal energy Innovative applications (GSHP, ORC, MED, EGS) Heat pumps/ORC electricity generation/Desalination with Thermal Methods WATER TECH. RTD&D Wave and Tidal (reducing our attention) Hydro Power for energy storage (increasing our attention for pump storage) HYDROGEN & RES Clean hydrogen production from RES Integration in the power system, DER, Storage Pursuing the H2-Island PV SYSTEMS & DER Emphasis on balance of system issues DTD&D on DG / DER, hybrid systems Storage tech. Emphasis on batteries SOLAR THERMAL RTD&D, Solar Cooling, Combi Concentrated Solar Power Generation (CSP)

3 WWW.SPIRE2030.EU Project Idea Concept Heat recovery from low temperature (<100ºC) process waste streams with the aid of high temperature heat pumps, in order to produce hot water or process steam, which will be utilized to partially cover plants needs in process heat. Technology development, demonstration in 2 industrial plants, monitoring & validation. 3

4 WWW.SPIRE2030.EU Project Idea Concept SPIRE PROCESS Key Action 2.2: Energy harvesting, storage and reuse Horizon topic EE 18 2014/2015: New technologies for utilization of heat recovery in large industrial systems, considering the whole energy cycle from heat production to transformation, delivery and end use. BUDGET ~6 million euro EU funding ~3.5 million euro Project duration: Jan 2015 – Dec 2018 4
