2 What’s coming up Fun energy facts (yes, really)
Today’s agenda Fun energy facts (yes, really) Changing our energy circumstances GEERS: Guelph Energy Efficiency Retrofit Strategy 2

3 $500 MILLION What does energy cost us per year?
Guelph’s annual cash outflow for energy is: $500 MILLION 3

4 Entire municipal budget of the City of Guelph, with $100M left over.
What could $500 million buy? 2 CN Towers 12 Police Stations 1 Airbus A380 Entire municipal budget of the City of Guelph, with $100M left over. 1 Movie ticket Per day Per Guelphite 2500 Lamborghinis 4

5 Where does that $500M go? It leaves town, and never comes back.
Electricity: Bruce Nuclear/ Niagara Falls Petroleum: Alberta Oil Sands Natural Gas: Bakken and Marcellus shale formations 5

6 Can we change this? Yes – Just imitate the best. 6

7 A $250M/year opportunity Before CEI $500M After CEI $250M
Local energy infrastructure (wires, poles, substations, etc.) After CEI $250M Reinvestment in Guelph economy 7

8 The Community Energy Initiative
A huge economic opportunity By 2031, we will achieve per-capita reductions of: 50% in energy consumption 60% in GHG emissions 11 core recommendations 8

9 Distributed generation
Can we achieve these goals? YES. And we can keep some – maybe all – of that $500M right here in Guelph. Use less Energy efficiency Use it smarter District energy Make more Distributed generation 9

10 Using Less Energy: GEERS
Guelph Energy Efficiency Retrofit Strategy

11 Staying away in droves Why homeowners don’t invest in energy efficiency I have to deal with the bank, an energy auditor, a contractor, suppliers, and the utilities? That’s awfully complicated. My bank’s loan terms don’t fit the savings stream. Eight year payback? Will I live in this house that long? I pay up front, and get my incentive after the work is done? I don’t like the sound of that… The materials and contracting are expensive. 11

12 The silver bullet: LICs
How Local Improvement Charges remove barriers Homeowner is not out of pocket Liability is attached to the home, not the homeowner Payment terms match up with the savings 12

13 Buying in bulk Purchasing as a city, rather than as citizens
Attic, wall, basement insulation Water heater Weather stripping High-efficiency furnace Triple-glazed windows Comfort controls 13

14 In the end it all balances out.
Contracting as mass production Transforming the home renovation business Sometimes you win… In the end it all balances out. …sometimes you lose. 14

15 Buying negawatts Conservation program delivery is expensive
Helping to deliver utility conservation programs Conservation program delivery is expensive Utilities do not have large retail sales forces Meeting targets can be difficult GEERS: Just what the doctor ordered 15

16 Deep Energy Efficiency Retrofits with GEERS
Community groups The ideal sales channel Project Neutral Deep Energy Efficiency Retrofits with GEERS Efficient Home Visits Transition Streets 16

17 In summary GEERS: One simple, easy-to-understand package
Financing via LICs Bulk buys of materials Partnership with community groups Bulk buys of services Incentives on large scale 17
