Changes at RCS 2012-2013 PL 90 implemented the new evaluation model We were Learning AND Doing School District Reconfiguration and building closures SEA 1 - Bargaining law changed at the same time….salary schedule went away…compensation model that nobody understood New Pearson 2013– Reading and Math

Kubler – Ross Five Stages of Grief Denial – “This too shall pass.” Anger – “Lawmakers are NOT teachers.” Bargaining – “We could just use our current tool and change the performance level ratings to match what is required.” Depression – “This is not possible! How can principals do 5 observations and pre and post conference meetings?” Acceptance – Year 2….we are doing this, but we are making modifications to create a workable model and validating principal and teacher efforts

Keeping track of documentation RCS utilized the Danielson model prior to PL 90 and the adoption of RISE. This is one file for one teacher in a school with multiple drawers in a filing cabinet to store documentation.

All electronic files for all teachers at our fingertips At home, at the office, on an airplane….IPADS and laptops can go with us and we can work on observations, artifacts, professional development tasks, mapping…… anywhere, anytime.

Keeping Track of observations and documentation IPADS and Laptops make the process streamlined. All data in one place and a year’s worth of work for every staff member easily accessible. Opportunities to work on own evidence and artifacts for uploading and mapping.

Each teacher has a page with all files in one place Rubric is always available for reference and areas that have evidence are easily and visually noted for quick understanding. Use for multiple years, you can go back to see how and where each staff member performed previously….historical value.

Implementation in Richmond Fall 2011 Train the trainer for RISE Spring 2012 – RISE training for teacher evaluation coupled with Standard For Success software training Visit to Greensburg….pilot site for discussion of implementation Summer 2012 – RISE training for Principal evaluation Fall 2012 – Get to work….spend a lot of time practicing and learning to use the software at the same time learning the RISE rubric.

Training for Teachers Spring 2012 While principals are being trained, they are introducing RISE to staff…study, reflect, dialogue during reconfiguration….maybe lost in the shuffle Fall 2012 – Introduce SFS added to RISE, utilize PD time for training…..small steps – What is an artifact….evidence of practice – Number of observations – Scripting – In PLC’s – Studied “Principles of Instruction – Research- Based Strategies that all Teachers Should Know” (Rosenshine, 2012) (Handout) A close read aligned with RISE Rubric – Instructional Techniques developed to assist teachers with evidence for artifacts aligned with RISE Rubric competencies (Handout)

Training for Teachers Spring 2013 – Continue dialogue with teachers regarding uploading artifacts, what is evidence, mapping…..walking through each step together….very time consuming but worth the effort. Fall 2013 – – RCS trims # of observations – Revisit rubric with staff….this year, gradual release….upload and map Domain 1 and 3 on their own Post observation meetings….

Training for Teachers Spring 2014 – – Develop checklist for each trimester (Handout) – Reflection of concerns regarding teacher understanding….back to the drawing board for continued training opportunities Fall 2014 – – Revisit rubric and the practice of evaluation for standardization across the district – New staff to train After 2 years of implementation…….
