5. Sheridan College English Department Statement Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s words or ideas as one’s own. Plagiarism includes the lack of quotation marks around direct quotations followed by proper citation and the lack of proper citation when summarizing or paraphrasing. Cutting and pasting research into writing always requires proper citation. Use of another student’s work, use of published material without proper citation, and use of work from an online source without proper citation will result in a 0 (zero) for the assignment which could result in failing the course. The instructor may choose to refer students using egregious forms of plagiarism to the appropriate Dean for disciplinary action. E-mail communication. (July 17, 2003)

6. Academic Honesty Academic dishonesty is a serious offense, regardless of what form it takes. An act is academically dishonest when, and only when, the act is attempted or performed in order to misrepresent in any manner one’s involvement in an academic task….. It is the responsibility of both the student and the person in charge of an academic task to make reasonable efforts to learn of, or make known the expectations and standards of conduct required in the performance of an academic task. Failure on the part of the student to observe and maintain required standards of academic honest require corrective action by the District.
