Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Interrelated surveys conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
2
Source of IPEDS Data Information gathered from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid programs Data collection required under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended
3
Required Data Reports Enrollments Program completions Graduation rates Faculty and staff Finances Institutional prices Student financial aid
4
Use of IPEDS Provides basic data needed to describe and analyze trends in postsecondary education in the U.S. Used by Congress, federal agencies, state governments, education providers, professional associations, private businesses, media, students, and parents More than 6,700 institutions complete IPEDS surveys each year
5
What Data Are Collected Institutional characteristics (foundation of the entire IPEDS system) Number of degrees conferred Tuition and fees Control or affiliation Types of programs Residence of first time students
6
Data Collected cont. Fall enrollment by race/ethnicity, gender, and enrollment status (part-time or full time) Level of study (undergraduate or graduate) Number of first-time freshmen by state of residence
7

8
Postsecondary Degrees and Certificates Conferred Number of students who complete a postsecondary education program by type and level of program Use of a coding system for postsecondary instructional programs –Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP)

WebCASPAR NSF integrated science and engineering resources data system available on the Web Provides a large body of multi-year statistical data resources for S&E at U.S. academic institutions Under NSF Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS)
10
WebCASPAR Allows users to create their own data tables using data from NSF and IPEDS surveys Also includes a large body of tables prepared by SRS
11
NSF Surveys Used in Personal Table Creation Earned Doctorates Federal Funds for R&D R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges Federal S&E Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions S&E Research Facilities Graduate Students and Postdocs in S&E
12
Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data (SESTAT) Comprehensive integrated system of information on employment, educational, and demographic characteristics of scientists and engineers in the U.S. May be used for both policy analysis and general research, having features for casual and more intensive data users
13
SESTAT cont. Merges data from NSF surveys into a single integrated data system Samples collected represent statistically about 13 million persons with science and engineering degrees
