3 Key Terms to Know King George III - said that England protected the colonists during the French and Indian War so colonists should pay for it through taxes boycott - refuse to buy something Parliament - British legislature. Helped make laws and acts for England and the colonies

4 “No Taxation Without Representation” ●Colonies were not represented in Britain’s government. The colonists were unhappy they had to pay taxes when they had no say in how they were being taxed.

5 Sugar Act (1764) Definition: Taxed colonists on sugar, coffee, indigo and certain kinds of wine. British reason: Paying costs for defending colonies reducing smuggling Colonist reaction: Colonists protested the act until it was repealed boycotts

6 Stamp Act (1765) Definition: Required colonists to buy a British stamp for every piece of paper they purchased British reason: Paying costs for defending colonies Colonist reaction: Stamps were often ignored protests through documents, mobs, debates

8 Quartering Act (1765) Definition: Required the American Colonies to provide British soldiers with housing British reason: Make sure the colonists paid their taxes and followed the law “protection” Colonist reaction: protests, refusing to house soldiers, rude treatment of soldiers

9 Townshend Act (1767) Definition: taxed colonists on glass, leads, paints, and tea imported to the colonies British reason: raising money for British government and defending colonies Colonist reaction: protests and boycotts

10 Tea Act (1773) Definition: Prohibited colonists from buying tea from anyone except the British East India Tea Co. British reason: Paying for the costs of defending colonies and to Save East India Tea Co. Colonist reaction: boycotts, Boston Tea Party
