3 1. Immigration Push-factors –things that force someone to leave their country. Pull-factors – things that attract someone to a new country.

4 The three main motivators for immigration are: –God (religion, to escape religious persecution in Europe) –Gold (wealth, money, and land were promised to colonist and indentured servants who were poor in Europe) –Glory (Enlightenment ideas of fame, curiosity, and adventure motivated people to explore)

5 Over 100 colonist disappeared from the Roanoke colony in 1590. The first English colonist came to America to look for gold, and to escape religious persecution. A joint-stock company is when many investors put their money together to make a profit. The first successful English settlement in North America was Jamestown. 6 The English colonist that saved Jamestown from disaster was John Smith. John Rolfe brought good quality tobacco to Jamestown and married Pocahontas. The House of Burgesses created in 1619, became the first representative assembly in the American colonies. Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion in Jamestown and took control of the House of Burgesses.
