10. Bench Control ●AR’s can play a big part in assisting with Bench Control! ●They are techniques you can do to DIFFUSE situations. ●There are many things you can say to DIFFUSE situations. ●There are also many things you can say to INFLAME the situation.

11. Bench Control-AR Techniques ● Use presence near the technical area ● Give equal time to both technical areas/coaches ● Find the peacemaker on the bench to help ● Use a well-placed smile

12. Bench Control-AR Techniques ●Be a “sounding board” for the coach without losing focus on the game ●Consider the “public, personal, and provocative” and “persistent” guidelines before asking the Referee to caution

Bench Control-Things you can say ● “I hear you” or “I understand you, coach” ● “I will talk to the Referee” ● “We will talk about it at half time” ● “Talk to me rather than shouting” ● “Coach, I understand you are upset but you need to calm down” ● “I can see you don’t agree with the call, but PLEASE – settle down”

14. Bench Control-Things you can say ●“The ref got it, give him a chance” ● “Where are you going?” ● “The ref was there” or “He’s very close to it” ● “This is a game of angles; we have a different angle than she does”

15. Bench Control-Things You CAN’T Say ● Curse, use abusive or insulting language: ●“Coach, shut up and sit down” ● Criticize the Referee: “I agree – he’s having a bad day” ● Attack or criticize the coach or his team

16. Bench Control-Things You CAN’T Say ●Say what you would have done in that situation ● Make physical contact with bench personnel ● Issue threats unless you are ready to act on them (caution/disqualify/eject) ● Use phrases that invite further debate or negative discussion

29. Perception Email from a coach: Onto the issues with today's match regarding Head RefereeXXXX. A free kick goal that decided the match and never crossed the goal line. The sideline official who had a much clearer view of the shot told my keeper that the ball never crossed, yet Mr. XXXX blew the whistle to signal a goal and when I questioned his call, I was then carded. In a close game, how can a referee make this call without the assistance of the AR? THIS IS A GAME DECIDER! To card the coach makes the situation even worse!

30. Knowledge of the WOMEN’S GAME ●Think back to last year’s clinic: ●How do fouls for the women differ from men? ●When do men get their revenge on players? When do women get their revenge on players? ●How do the passing pattern of females differ from males?

31. Knowledge of the WOMEN’S GAME ●Unless we recognize these nuances of the game, we can lose match control which will ultimately make for a poor experience for the players, spectators, coaches, and officials

32. Summary 1.Bench Control-Don’t let Coaches elevate the temperature of the game. It doesn’t have to be a caution but it has to be dealt with! 2.Game Management-FEEL THE GAME! Manage the reaction of the players. Understand WHY they feel the way they do 3.Perception-Work Rate is high all year long! Regardless of the score! 4.Knowledge of the Women’s Game-Know the Nuances!
