2. Many of the words we use today came from Greek or Latin words used in the past. A root is the basic element of a word. Most roots need to be combined with other elements in order to be a complete word. Remember: the roots, in most cases, are NOT words. They are PARTS of words. Being able to identify roots within words can help build your comprehension when you read.
