Example OODA Loop When to Use
3
You are flying an F-22 at an altitude of 22,000 feet. You have 9,000 lbs of fuel. Your left engine catches fire and ruptures a fuel tank. You lose 5,000 lbs of fuel. You need 4,100 lbs of fuel to get back to base. You decide that the best course of action would be to fly the plane away from populated areas and eject. You then implement your plan.

flying an F-22; 22,000 feet; 9,000 lbs of fuel; left engine fire; ruptured fuel tank. Define what the problem is Be able to separate obstacles from the problem itself
5
lose 5,000 lbs of fuel; need 4,100 lbs of fuel Gather information Identify key facts from the problem Criteria is associated with the problem? Ensure understanding and promote free flow of ideas
6
best course would be to fly the plane away from populated areas and eject. Determine which solution that fits criteria Use knowledge/expertise to select best solution Sometimes someone within the group has solved a similar problem
7
You then implement your plan. Once complete, observe new situation. Your action could be successful, or require more action It’s the OODA LOOP, which means that you might go through it more than once.
8
Anytime you are presented with a problem! Be sure to verbalize these steps Shows evaluators that you are thinking through a problem
