CIT 1100

In this chapter you will learn to:  Explain the characteristics and functions of printers  Demonstrate the ability to set up a printer  Demonstrate green printing practices

Printers output data from a computer onto paper, printing text as well as pictures, there are even 3-D printers capable of creating three- dimensional objects  There are numerous types of printers available for use today: ◦ Dye-sublimation ◦ Thermal ◦ Ink jet ◦ Laser

3 Dimensional Printer

Inkjet printers create printouts by squirting ink out of special inkjet cartridges  They use both black and colored ink cartridges, can combine ink colors to create a wide range of hues  Inkjet printers are used for both text and images  Inkjet printers use either liquid ink cartridges or solid, wax-based ink cartridges

An inkjet printer is a nonimpact printer because its print mechanism never actually touches the paper, cannot be used to create multi-form output Inkjet printer processes an entire page at a time before it starts, referred to as a page printer The inkjet printer uses a friction feed mechanism to feed paper through the printer Sheets of paper are stacked in the paper tray, where small rollers press down to create friction and pull a sheet of paper through the printer

The best Inkjet printers have the paper feed under the print mechanism rather than top fed, over time the rollers that feed the paper can become worn. With top fed printers multiple pages will occasionally be fed causing the printer to jam. Always choose a printer that uses separate containers for ink so if you run out of one color you only change one container Avoid printers that do not supply black ink relying instead on mixing multiple colors to create black images, it wastes ink

 Most liquid inkjet printers and all solid inkjet printers use a thermal process to eject ink onto the paper  The printing element heats up, boiling the ink in the case of liquid inkjet printers, and melting it in the case of solid inkjet printers  A tiny bubble of ink forms on the end of the print nozzle. Once the bubble gets big enough, it pops, at which point electrically charged plates deflect the ink onto the paper.

Tiny Electrically charged plated deflect the spray of ink creating the image on the paper Ink Spray Vertical plates Ink Fountain Sprayed on INK Image

Like inkjet printers, laser printers are nonimpact page printers- the mechanism never touches the paper, and the entire page is imaged before being transferred to paper  Some laser printers support duplex printing, allowing printing on both sides of the paper, either through a built-in mechanism or an add- on duplexing tray  Laser printers are capable of resolutions as high as 2400x2400 dots per inch

 Windows sees a "printer" not as a physical device but a program controlling one or more physical printers  A physical printer is called a "print device" in Windows  Printer drivers and a spooler are present, but in Windows they are integrated into the printer itself giving Windows flexibility  For example, one printer can support multiple print devices, enabling a system to act as a print server. If one print device goes down, the printer software automatically redirects the output to a working print device.

 Print devices connect through a multipurpose port, such as USB, FireWire, or parallel; or wirelessly through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, network connected or infrared  USB and parallel ports are the most common connections for printers, parallel printer ports have been almost completely replaced by USB  Serial or SCSI printers existed at one time but these are so rare as to be almost not worth mentioning

New printers usually come with a driver disc of some sort, which you insert into your computer's optical drive  The on-screen instructions usually tell you what to do, right down to when you should plug the printer in  Installing a printer is the art of inserting a disc and clicking the Next button over and over again until it works

Toner, ink cartridges, paper, and printers themselves all eventually make their way to the trash  Fortunately, while you can't really get around having to buy new ink, you can lessen the impact your printer waste has on the environment, toner cartridges for example can be recycled  In today's environmentally sensitive world, many laws regulate the proper disposal of most printer components  Check with the local sanitation department or disposal services company before throwing away any component
