CAUSES The 1950s French colonization left political instability and civil unrest which was fuelled by the spill over of the Vietnam war. Three factions opposed the Phnom Penh government.

REASONS FOR AUS (UN) INVOLVMENT U.N was involved to stabilize the region. Organised negotiations between the 4 opposing forces. Ceasefire was achieved. Australia was one of the countries involved in assuring the terms cease fire was followed through.

Roles Performed by Aus Contributed to military and civilian police personnel. A military communications unit of 40. An air unit of four utility helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft.

ACHIEVMENTS Cease fire was mostly maintained. Few casualties after U.N involvement. Elections were held for the Cambodian people to choose their government. 90% participation. U.N oversaw transition to civil rule from severe unrest.

MISSION SUCCESS 92% successful. Khmer Rouge where not dealt with.
