Cambodians helping Cambodians How do we get Cambodians to donate to local NGOs Presented by Nathan Chan and Men Chomneau

Summary of Problem There are many issues in Cambodia but sometimes we don’t see it. NGOs working on the issues require money/funding Funding should come from Cambodia – Cambodia should help Cambodia NGOs are too dependent on international funding Resources (money) are available in Cambodia

Summary of Problem But there are BARRIERS to DONATING 1. Cambodians don’t know about the issues or there are too many and can’t choose They need passion about the issues 2. Cambodians don’t know how to donate money 3. Cambodians don’t always trust where the money is going

Proposed solution 1. Get Cambodians to know about the issues and be passionate about the issues through the use of social media and other technology 2. Make available easy platforms to donate money 3. Earn trust from the donor where the money is going Breakdown the barriers

Technology to solve the problem Advertising Social Media to spread the issues (Facebook fanpages, Twitter, Youtube) Traditional media (Radio, TV) that directs them to website and social media SMS from one friend to another (forward SMS) IVR NGO website Advertise on popular websites (like Khmer24.com or dap- news.com) Engage Cambodians in the issue Social media to comment and share Website forums or chat rooms Crowdsourcing to identify and map issues See and hear stories of the needy Social media and website to make available IVR Talk to Group 4 to connect donor to beneficiaries Cambodians don’t know about the issues

Technology to solve the problem TECHNOLOGY EXISTS in CAMBODIA! Bank to bank (same) transfers – Acleda, ANZ/Wing, SBC, ABA, etc… Cellphone carrier to cellphone carrier (same) transfers – Mobitel, Smart, Metfone, Beeline, etc… Cell phone Short Codes We don’t know how to donate, we are a cash society

Technology to solve the problem Create a better brand and image Social media and websites Distribute DVDs that has interactive elements that don’t need internet (ex: prezi or WebDocs) Make external audit of programs Create video and make available on youtube of evaluations Create reports available online (include finance and whether or not NGO met the goals set) Who am I donating my money to and where is my money going?

Technology to solve the problem Connect donor with beneficiaries. Provide reports, stories, pictures, videos either through website and social media or email. Talk to group 4 about connecting donors and beneficiaries. Use collaborative feedback system (similar to amazon reviews for products Donors provide feedback online and can share with other friends using social media Beneficiaries provide feedback through cellphone Record testimonies IVR (satisfaction) NGO records video and uploads to social media s Who am I donating my money to and where is my money going?

Existing solutions or Relevant Links Social Media already exists and active 740,000 facebooks accounts in Cambodia Most students and working class have laptops TV and Radio Billboard advertisements Internet access available at home, work or mobile IVR – OpenInstitute Openstreetmap.com to gather information

Follow-up Actions Create a website in Khmer Create social media accounts (facebook, twitter, youtube, etc) Create content for social media, websites, tv, radio, SMS, WebDocs, etc,… Videos, pictures, news, information, how to donate Purchase advertising space (tv, radio, facebook ads, google ads, market entraces…) Add engagement elements to website and social media Forums and chatrooms Links to facebook to make things viral for example: videos or pictures

Follow-up Actions Create accounts with banks and cellphone carriers to receive money Make contracts with cellphone carriers and shortcode technology company to receive money via short code Make available reports, stories and videos online Make voice testimonies available on IVR Connect feedback system to website and social media from donors and beneficiaries
