Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC) Established in 1992 as an auxiliary unit of Turku School of Economics (1992–2009) Special Unit of University of Turku since 2010 Offices in Turku, Helsinki and Tampere Personnel: 55–60 Mekong group in the FFRC – http://www.mekong.fihttp://www.mekong.fi Research and capacity building projects in the Mekong since 2002 Projects funded mainly by: –Academy of Finland –Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland –EU

3 Partners in our current HEI-ICI project Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) Founded in 1964 The leading institution in Cambodia giving education in different fields of engineering (chemical, food, civil, energy, electrical, computer, industrial, mechanical, rural). Around 3000 students (2009) National University of Laos (NUOL) Founded in 1996 The only national university in the country Around 26 000 students (2006) Tampere University of Technology

4 HEI-ICI-SEED: Sustainable Energy Education Development at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and at the National University of Laos (NUOL) The overall objective of the project is to contribute to sustainable energy planning through improved energy related knowledge and expertise on a national level. The purpose of the HEI-ICI project is to enhance and promote Sustainable Energy Education, Research and Development at Faculty of Engineering at NUOL and Department of Electrical and Energy Engineering at ITC.

Training of Trainers –Renewable energy technology –Energy systems –Energy planning and modelling –Environmental issues of energy production –Pedagogical skills (Centre for Learning Research) Curriculum development Development of Renewable Energy degree programmes Field visits Setting up Energy Research and Training Centre Support networking and cooperation with other universities in the region

8 Why do we have this HEI-ICI project? 1)FFRC Mekong group competes for nearly 100% of its funding – projects needed to pay salaries 2)For our partners (ITC and NUOL): Project proposal based on the needs identified by partner universities. Funding for improving the skills and knowledge of their staff, updating research equipment. 3)Synergies with other capacity building and research projects. 4)For the MFA…
