2 Rule #1  BE Verb is special Negatives Yes/No Questions RuleNOT goes AFTER the BE verbMove the BE verb to the front. Examples I am NOT hungry. She is NOT the teacher. They are NOT from Thailand. Are you hungry? Is she the teacher? Are they from Thailand? (with a Helping Verb, the BE stays) He could be from Thailand.  Could he be from Thailand? She has been a teacher.  Has she been a teacher?

3 Rule #2  Subject Questions are easy Just replace the subject with the WH word 95% of the time, use the 3 rd sing. (-s) verb. * – With a BE verb, the subject can be missing, and plural ** StatementsSubject Questions She is the teacher.Who is the teacher? They are happy.Who is happy? * Mike can write essays.Who can write essays? The computers have been repaired.What has been repaired? * We love our teacher.Who loves our teacher? * You are the best (student / students).??? * **

4 Rule #3  Helping Verbs There are two kinds of Helping Verbs – Modals Can, should, might, will… – He can be a nice guy. (note – NO “S”) – We will write this in our notebooks. – Auxiliary Verbs Have, BE – I have written the essay. – We are listening to the teacher. – Rice is grown in Cambodia.

5 Rule #3  Helping Verbs NegativesYes/No Questions RuleNOT goes after the First Helping Verb (HV) The Helping Verb (HV) moves to the front. He can be a nice guy. We will write this. They should smoke tobacco. She has written an essay. He can not be a nice guy. We will not write this. They should not smoke tobacco She has not written an essay. Can he be a nice guy? Will we write this? Should they smoke tobacco? Has she written an essay? NOTYes/No Question

6 Rule #4A  All Other Verbs NegativesYes/No Questions RuleIf there is no helping verb, And the main verb is not BE, Use DO (Use it like a helping verb.) She goes to school We have rice. They write essays. [She do goes to school]  [She does go to school.]  She does not go to school We do have rice.  We do not have rice. They do write essays.  They do not write essays She do goes to school  [She does go to school.]  Does she go to school? We do have rice.  We do have rice.  Do we have rice? They do write essays.  Do they write essays?

7 Rule #4B  All other WH Questions Yes/No Questions We are in school. Are we in school?Are we [where]?Where are we? I can write an essay. Can I write an essay?Can I write [what]?What can I write? They have eaten rice. Have they eaten rice?Have they eaten [what]? What have they eaten? She has a pen.Does she have a pen?Does she have [what]?What does she have? 1.Make a Yes/No Question. 2.Replace the answer with a WH word. 3.Move the WH word to the front.

8 Rule #4C  DO is a magnet/vacuum The present tense “-s” leaves the verb and moved to DO  DOES She eats rice  [She do eats rice]  [She does eat rice]  Does she eat rice? The past tense leaves the verb and moves to DO  DID She ate rice  [She do ate rice]  [She did eat rice]  Did she eat rice?
