01.06.051 APPLICATIONS OF METEOSAT SECOND GENERATION (MSG) Flooding Author: Pirkko Pylkkö (Finnish Meteorological Institute) pirkko.pylkko@fmi.fi Jochen Kerkmann (EUMETSAT) jochen.kerkmann@eumetsat.int Sep 2005

01.06.052 Flood detection and monitoring Background Rapidly updated satellite rainfall estimations at the geostationary scale – one of the tools to estimate floods Benefits are more precise mesoscale and global scale weather forecasts, better monitoring of for instance flash floods, storm-scale events (See also Satmanu Manual, http://www.knmi.nl/satrep SatRep Manual, Case Studies, Catastrophic cases, 06-13 Aug 2002 Flooding over central Europe)http://www.knmi.nl/satrep BUT MSG SEVIRI channels can also be used to monitor the extent of floods Channels 1-3 (0.6, 0.8 and 1.6µm) and the HRV are the basic channels for flood detection Vegetation index (channels 0.6 and 0.8 µm) of AVHRR like instruments has been used traditionally for flood detection. SEVIRI offers some additional tools for floods – examples on following pages

01.06.053 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 Situation before: only MET-7 VIS available - Some indication of flood can be seen South of Alps northeast of Italy

01.06.054 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI 0.6µm channel 09:00 UTC Nothing much to be seen alone

01.06.055 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI 0.8 µm channel 09:00 UTC Flooded area can be seen pretty well This channel is reflecting vegetation very well and water is black

01.06.056 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI 1.6 µm channel 09:00 UTC Flooding area visible even better than with 0.8

01.06.057 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI rgb combination of 1.6, 0.8 and 0.6µm channels 09:00 UTC Flooded area quite distinct, but the resolution – is there anything to correct that?

01.06.058 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI HRV channel 11:00 UTC The resolution is now much better

01.06.059 Example Flooded rice fields in Italy 24th Apr 2003 SEVIRI 1.6 combined twice with HRV channel 11:00 UTC This is giving the best resolution and detection

01.06.0510 Example Floods in Angola and Zambia 3rd Feb 2004

01.06.0511 Example Floods in Angola and Zambia 3rd Feb 2004 11:30

01.06.0512 Example Floods in Angola and Zambia 3rd Feb 2004 11:30

01.06.0513 Example Floods in Angola and Zambia 3rd Feb 2004 11:30

01.06.0514 Example Floods in Romania 26th Jul 2005 12:00 Meteosat8 HRV channel right AVHRR below left Red circle shows flooded area
