W.L.I.C. Invasive Species Prevention Program Presented by: Kaila Schmidt and Guy Genske With Special Guest Jake Allman from the Missouri Department of Conservation November 13, 2012

 What is an invasive species?  What preventative actions has W.L.I.C. already taken?  What else are we considering?  Q&A with expert Jake Allman, Missouri Department of Conservation Agenda

 Invasive species  Capable of attaching to submerged hard surfaces  Spreads via commercial and recreational boat traffic, amphibious airplanes, scuba equipment, transport containers, fishing gear, and wildlife  High reproductive rates  Limited number of natural predators  Can populate a body of water in two or three years  Impacting electric power generation, industrial water intake facilities, disrupting food webs and Eco systems, sport and commercial fishing and navigation, recreational boating, beaches and agriculture. What is a zebra mussel?

 Reviewed best practices, policies of nearby lakes and consulted with the Missouri Department of Conversation  Resulting in new protection policies effective May 1, 2009:  WLIC will authorize residents and providers to remove and place watercrafts into the Lake. This includes kayaks, canoes, sailboats, pontoon boats, fishing boats and other types of watercrafts.  No non-resident vendors or trailers will be allowed to directly remove and/or place watercrafts W.L.I.C. Policies

 Access areas will require keys to boat ramps.  People will be educated about how to clean watercraft effectively to remove any invasive species and be required to sign an Invasive Prevention Certification document.  Rules and regulations have been updated with specific line items and fines associated with invasive species as destruction of property. Authorized residents and providers may incur administrative fees for destruction of property if the policy and process is not followed. W.L.I.C. Policies Continued

Zebra Mussel Cleaning Guidelines Clean - Drain - Dry Inspect Thoroughly inspect your boat's hull, drive unit, trim plates, trolling plates, prop guards, transducers, centerboards, rollers, axles, anchor, anchor rope and trailer. Scrape off and trash any suspected mussels, however small. Remove all water weeds hanging from the boat or trailer before leaving any water body. Dump Trash leftover bait on land in a trash can, away from water, before leaving any body of water. Leftover live aquatic bait that has contact with infested waters should not be taken to un-infested waters. Drain Drain water from the motor, live well, bilge and transom wells and any other water from your boat and equipment while on land before leaving any water body.

Zebra Mussel Cleaning Guidelines Clean - Drain - Dry Rinse When you get home--before launching your boat into un-infested waters-- thoroughly rinse and dry the hull, drive unit, live wells (and live well pumping system), bilge, trailer, bait buckets, engine cooling system and other boat parts that got wet while in infested waters; use a hard spray from a garden hose. If your boat was in infested waters for a long period of time, or if you find any attached adult mussels, use HOT (104 F) water instead of cold, or tow the boat through a do-it-yourself carwash and use the high pressure hot water to "de- mussel" your boat. Do not use chlorine bleach or other environmentally unsound washing solutions. Dry Boats, motors and trailers should be allowed to dry thoroughly in the sun for at least five days before boating again in another water way.
