Introduction to Echinoderms 5 th Grade
2
What are basic characteristics of an Echinoderm? Invertebrate ENDOskeleton (Internal skeleton) Water vascular system: a system of fluid filled tubes Radial symmetry Tube Feet
3
Echinoderms: http://shapeoflife.org/video/animation/echin oderm-animation-sea-star-body-plan http://shapeoflife.org/video/animation/echin oderm-animation-sea-star-body-plan
4
Belong to the phylum “Echinodermata,” meaning “hedgehog skin”
5
Where do they live? ALL live in salt water
6
ENDOskeleton An INTERNAL skeleton made of hardened plates with skin stretched over it
7
Radial Symmetry
8
Tube Feet
9
Stick out from the echinoderm’s sides or underside Act like small, sticky suction cups Suction is used for gripping the surface beneath the echinoderm Use their tube feed to move slowly and capture food
10
How many species? More than 5000
11
Name 4 types of Echinoderms. Bonus: Think of a 5 th ! Sea stars Brittle stars Sea urchins Sea cucumber Sand dollars!
12
Common Questions: Where is a sea star’s mouth? How does it breathe? Mouth is located on the underside of its body in the center Breathe through small gills in their skin
13
Fun fact : If the central disc is still attached, sea stars can regenerate!
14
Sea Star Anatomy
15
Brittle Stars
16
Unlike a sea star’s arms, a brittle star’s arms are long and slim, with flexible joints Tube feet have no suction cups. They are used for catching food but not moving Move in a snake-like motion

18
Sea Urchin No arms Moveable spine protects body (think of a pin cushion!) Use bands of tube feet that extend out between the spines Have teeth-like structures used to scrape & cut food
19

21
Sea Cucumbers
22
Can be red, brown, blue, or green Leather-like skin Soft, flexible, muscular bodies Tube feet that allow them to crawl slowly along the ocean floor Mouth is surrounded by tentacles –filter feeders! Sea Cucumber Anatomy
24
Sea Cucumber Fun Facts Can throw our their intestines as a defense mechanism and then regenerate them Some can be poisonous! They stick tentacles into their mouths and lick them off, the way you might lick your fingers!

Sand Dollars Found in the Intertidal Zone of the ocean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykoYhCm iaH0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykoYhCm iaH0
