2
What is a rock? An earth material that is a mixture of several ingredients, called minerals
3
What is a mineral? An ingredient of a rock that cannot be broken down any further
4
What is a crystal? A material that is left when water is evaporated from a mixture
5
What is the diameter of a rock? A measurement of size that stretches the length of a rock, across the center
6
What is the depth of a rock? A measurement of size that tells how thick it is
7
What is the circumference of a rock? A measurement of size that tells the distance in a circle, around a rock
8
What are properties that someone could use to identify a rock? Size, color, luster, shape, hardness, and texture
9
‘Cube’ or ‘rounded’ are examples of what mineral property? shape
10
‘Metallic’ or ‘dull’ are examples of what mineral property? luster
11
‘Striped’ or ‘green’ are examples of what mineral property? color
12
‘Volcano’ or ‘desert’ are examples of what mineral property? location
13
‘4 cm’ or ‘8 g’ are examples of what mineral property? size
14
‘Sharp’ or ‘smooth’ are examples of what mineral property? texture
15
How can you tell the hardness of a rock? Perform a scratch test or scrape it with something
16
How can you tell if a rock contains calcite? Put it in vinegar and see if it bubbles
17
What is the difference between a rock and a mineral? A rock is made up of several minerals and a mineral is the same substance throughout
18
How is a mock rock like a real rock? Both are made up of ingredients that give them their special properties
19
How does evaporation help you study mock rocks? It helps separate the parts of a rock.
20
How did mixing mock rocks with water help you learn more about them? It helped to separate the ingredients and evaporated the water into crystals.
21
Name a job that involves working with earth materials. Geologist, teacher, paleontologist, seismologist, archaeologist
22
Name 3 tools that you used in class to work with earth materials. Pick, nail, tape measure, ruler, magnifying glass, penny, paper clip, vinegar, vial, evaporating dish, fingernail, water
