Justice is in one scale, and self- preservation in the other.“   - Thomas Jefferson to John Holmes, (discussing slavery and the Missouri question), Monticello, 22 April 1820.   In your Composition Book explain what Jefferson is talking about.

3 What was the Missouri Compromise?   Maine would be admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state.   Slavery would be prohibited in the Louisiana Territory north of 36 degrees 30 minutes.   Missouri prohibited from Discriminating against free blacks from other states.

4 Question  Look ahead…  Will the Missouri Compromise hold?  Why or why not.  Who supported it? Who opposed it?  Why?

5 What role did Henry Clay play in the passage of the Missouri Compromise?  He brokered the compromise to allow Missouri to enter the Union.  Became known as the “Great Compromiser”

6 Thomas Jefferson on Division of Nation caused by Missouri Compromise.   "...this momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell (to sound in an ominous manner) of the Union. It is hushed, indeed, for the moment. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence. A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated; and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper."   What does Jefferson mean? What do his comments anticipate or predict?

10 Why was the Monroe Doctrine necessary?  Many Central and South American countries had thrown off colonial dominance and declared their independence.  Some European countries thought of re- establishing control over former colonies.

11 What did the Monroe Doctrine state?  Declared American dominance of the Western Hemisphere and told other countries to not interfere in the Americas.  How did we plan on enforcing the Doctrine?
