Independence School District Child and Family Learning Center (CFLC) History: 1979: Started Head Start Services 1981: ISD piloted new program called P.A.T. 1987: Independences implements Dr Ed Zigler’s Schools of the 21 st Century through a grant from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation 1988: Two schools began pre-school, before and after care, and flip-flop (AM/PM) Kindergarten 1990: ISD began Family Literacy (Even Start) 1995: Partners with Local Investment Commission to create Caring Communities

Independence School District 1997: ISD pilots Head Start services into five schools 1998: 73% of voters approve local bond to build early childhood centers 1999: Early Head Start Collaboration begins 2003: First in State to offer Comprehensive Head Start Services to all Pre-K Students School Based 2003 – 2005: ISD receives three 21CCLC awards 2005: Partnership with Department of Social Services to launch a Child Welfare Initiative
