MISSISSIPPI ENTERS THE UNION AS A SLAVE STATE 1818 ILLINOIS ENTERS THE UNION AS A FREE STATE 1819 ALABAMA ENTERS THE UNION AS SLAVE STATE. BALANCE OF POWER BETWEEN SLAVE STATES AND FREE STATES
IS EQUAL IN CONGRESS 1820 APPLICATION BY MISSOURI TO ENTER THE UNION AS A SLAVE STATE. THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE OF 1820 IS DRAFTED BY BY HENRY CLAY OF KENTUCKY AND BECOMES LAW. * MISSOURI ENTERS THE UNION AS SLAVE STATE. * MAINE ENTERS THE UNION AS A FREE STATE. * BOUNDARY FOR SLAVERY IN THE WEST IS SET. * BALANCE OF POWER BETWEEN FREE STATES AND SLAVE STATES REMAINS EQUAL. BY 1820 THE UNITED STATES HAD GROWN TO INCLUDE TWENTYTWO STATES. 1. ELEVEN STATES WERE FREE STATES - SLAVERY WAS PROHIBITED. 2. ELEVEN STATES WERE SLAVE STATES - SLAVERY WAS ALLOWED. THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE ALSO SET THE BOUNDARY FOR SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. SLAVERY WAS BANNED NORTH OF 36, 30' LATITUDE IN THE LANDS ACQUIRED WITH THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE.
