9 Writing Activity- Organizing
Group facts together by topic If some facts don’t “go with” the others, get rid of it. Rewrite facts, in groups, in the order in which you’ll write about them. Start from general and move to specific EX: On Halloween, people go Trick-or-Treating. Children dress up in costumes. People give out candy. Some types of candy people give out include Snickers, Reese’s Cups, and M&M’s. People give out healthier options too. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead. SWBATrevise a paragraph.

10 SWBATrevise a paragraph.
Check with a Partner With a partner, review your groupings. Have a discussion about what makes the most sense. Do your facts go from general to specific? Do you need to add any information? Do you need to take out any information that doesn’t match your other information? SWBATrevise a paragraph.

11 Writing Activity- First Draft
Using the order and grouping from the Organizing Step, write your sentences in paragraph format. EX: On Halloween, people go Trick-or-Treating. Children dress up in costumes. People give out candy. Some types of candy people give out include Snickers, Reese’s Cups, and M&M’s. People give out healthier options too. SWBATrevise a paragraph.

12 Writing Activity- Validating Information
After your first draft is written, read over it to make sure it is answering the entire question. If it does not, add additional information/sentences until the question is fully answered. EX: On Halloween, people go Trick-or-Treating. Children dress up in costumes. People give out candy. Some types of candy people give out include Snickers, Reese’s Cups, and M&M’s. People give out healthier options too. SWBATrevise a paragraph.

13 Writing Activity- Shaping
Add topic sentence and closing sentence. Topic Sentence: Should start to answer the question being asked OR introduce the paragraph’s topic VERY GENERALLY. Closing Sentence- SHOULD NOT REPEAT THE TOPIC SENTENCE, but should offer the reader a final thought. Typically, the closing sentence is an opinion. Add transitions, make changes for readability EX: Halloween is a holiday celebrated at the end of October. On Halloween night, people go Trick-or-Treating. Children dress up in costumes, and adults give out candy. Some types of candy people give out include Snickers, Reese’s Cups, and M&M’s. People also give out healthier options. Generally, everyone enjoys this holiday. SWBATrevise a paragraph.
