Today you’ll need your SpringBoard, journal, novel and a writing utensil. Entry Task: 3/24 Turn to page 232 of your SpringBoard. Read through the list of statements made, and using context clues- voice, tone and content- attempt to identify the character.
2
Journal check As you are working on the next part of the assignment, I will be coming around and checking your novel vocabulary and your interpretive statements from last night.
3
Analyze voice Partner up, and choose 4 quotes. Write and analyze them using the lead in, quote, and commentary format. The lead in should identify the context of the quote (what was happening when it was said.) The commentary should explain the syntax and/or diction, and how those provide a specific tone to the quote. IE: When Miss Caroline discovered that Scout could read and write, she said, “Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading with a fresh mind.” The formal diction of referring to Atticus as “your father” and the direct order implied in the syntax of her sentence, creates a condescending tone towards Scout and her family. The implied impression that Atticus does not know how to teach, and she is the only one qualified to teach Scout, adds emphasis to the condescension and superiority she felt.
4
Choose your best two (per table group) Once you’ve chosen the best one, grab one strip of paper and a marker. Write out your voice analysis on the provided strip of paper, and then tape to the back board. Make sure it’s legible, and large enough to read. Put your names on the back in pencil.
