MONOLOGUES

 monologue (or monolog) is an extended uninterrupted speech by a character in a drama.  The character may be speaking his or her thoughts aloud, directly addressing another character, or speaking to the audience, especially the former.  Monologues are common across the range of dramatic media (plays, films, animation, etc.).  Monologuing is also a form of drama. It is used to get inside the characters thoughts and feeling by using what is called an omniscient narrator.

Performing Your Monologue 1) Monologues should always be spoken to another person. 2) NEVER use a member of your audience as your imaginary partner. 3) Look at the spot where your imaginary person is placed at the start of your monologue, when you want to emphasize a point and when you are awaiting a response. However, do not constantly look at that spot.

Learning Activities 1) Select the monologue to be presented, making sure it is of appropriate length and content. 2) Memorize the monologue. 3) Rehearse the monologue.

Learning Activities 4) Gather any props, set pieces or costume pieces that may be necessary. 5) Perform the monologue in front of an small audience as a dress rehearsal to acquire feedback and suggestions before the final performance.

 Rote memory – learn lines one by one through drilling them  Unit Memorization – learn all material scene by scene and coordinate lines with movement  Verbatim – using exact words

Performance Assessment  Perform the monologue in front of the teacher.  You are graded based on effort, preparedness, and believability of the character.  If it is not memorized, you will receive a 0 for this assignment.  This is a major project grade.

Performance Day will be Friday, August 28
