LA FORME POSSESSIVE

1. Use the preposition “de” + a noun Exemple: C’est le livre de la professeur. 2. Use an possessive adjective Exemple: Luc et Stéphanie sont mes amis. HERE ARE 2 WAYS TO EXPRESS “POSSESSION” IN FRENCH:

POSSESSION WITH “DE” In French, the apostrophe s to express possession does NOT exist! Instead, use “de” followed by a proper noun or a common noun Here is an example with its English equivalent: Je suis la soeur de Pascal. I am the sister of Pascal. (or I’m Pascal’s sister) If the noun that follows “de” is a common noun, you may need to use a contraction: Les rayons du* soleil sont éblouissants! The rays of the sun are blinding!* du = (de + le)

THE POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES my = mon ma mes your = ton ta tes his = son sa ses her = son sa ses our = notre nos your = votre vos their = leur leurs Use a possessive adjective to replace “de” + noun

HIS / HER “HER” CAN BE “SON”, “SA” OR “SES” C’est son livre  “ livre” is a masculine noun! (It’s her book) C’est sa trompette  “trompette” is a feminine noun ! (It’s her trumpet) “HIS” CAN BE “SON”, “SA” OR “SES ” C’est son livre  “livre” is a masculine noun! (It’s his book) C’est sa trompette  “trompette” is a feminine noun! (It’s his trumpet) So, a possessive adjective AGREES with the NOUN that follows it and NOT the possessor!
