What Does Infectious Mean? Infectious or Communicable Disease Spread from one living thing to another or through the environment. Pathogen Causes a disease Virus, Bacteria Fungi, Protozoan, Parasites

Differences? Contagious Disease is spread from person to person Not ALL infectious diseases are contagious!!

Virus Small genetic material surrounded by coating. May prevent with vaccine Weakened pathogen to stimulate immune system Examples: Influenza (flu) Common Cold AIDS Smallpox Bacteria Single-celled organism Cure with antibiotics Kills or slows growth of bacteria Examples: Strep Throat Tuberculosis Lyme Disease Bacterial Pinkeye

FungiProtozoanParasites Plantlike organisms Mold/Yeast Examples include Athlete’s Foot Single-Celled organisms larger than bacteria Usually from water Amebic Dysentery is an example. Organism that lives off of host Tapeworm or Malaria are examples.

Transmission Direct Contact Touching, Sneezing/Coughing, Sharing Person, Animal, Insect Indirect Contact Objects

Common Viral Infections Common Cold Inflammation (irritation) of nose and throat Symptoms: runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, headache Influenza (Flu) Respiratory System (lungs) Symptoms: high fever, chills, dry cough, joint/muscle pain, extreme fatigue

Common Bacterial Infections Strep Throat Sore throat, fever, enlarged lymph nodes in neck Tuberculosis Respiratory System (lungs) Cough, fever, sweats Treatment requires 5 antibiotics Sinus Infections Congestion, runny nose Usually not contagious
