1 How do organisms get their energy?
Cellular Respiration How do organisms get their energy?

2 Review What is respiration? Where does respiration occur?
What organisms undergo respiration?

3 Respiration & Photosynthesis
When comparing the equations for photosynthesis and respiration do you see anything familiar? Anything different? Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2

4 Respiration & Photosynthesis
Read the section on comparing photosynthesis and respiration in your cells and heredity textbook. How do they compare the two processes in the book? How do they contrast the two processes?

5 Respiration & Photosynthesis

6 Venn Diagram Each student should work on a Venn Diagram, that will compare & contrast, respiration & photosynthesis Really think hard on this and give appropriate answers.

7 Fermentation Do all organisms need to use oxygen to release energy?

8 Fermentation Some cells are able to obtain energy from food without using oxygen. Some single-celled organisms that live in areas that lack oxygen. These organisms obtain their energy through the process of fermentation. The amount of energy released from glucose during fermentation is much lower than the amount of energy released during respiration.

9 Fermentation Do animals go through fermentation?
What do you think? Explain your answer? Image courtesy of bashzone.com

10 Lactic Acid Fermentation
Animals do in fact go through fermentation! Think about a time when you were running in gym class, practice, or a sports game. Have you ever felt your leg muscles become sore and tired? Image from

11 Lactic Acid Fermentation
Your muscle become sore because they are using oxygen faster than it can be brought to the cell. Because your cells lack oxygen, fermentation occurs. One product of this type of fermentation is an acid known as lactic acid. When this lactic acid builds up you feel that painful sensation in your muscles. What are some signs that you body is using fermentation vs. respiration?
