2
Brief History of Horn BNB-2 Horn BNB-2 has been in service since October 2004 Has 400M+ pulses (Designed for 200M cycles with > 95% confidence level with respect to conductor fatigue) Horn has a total of 6 water headers flowing 3 gpm each (each header has 3 nozzles @ 1 gpm each for a total nominal flow rate of 18 gpm) BNB-2 has had 2 water headers completely valved out due to water leaks in those circuits (operating @ minimal acceptable flow rate) 2/02/15Kris E. Anderson | Status of BNB Horn Chargeout2
3
Brief History of Horn BNB-2 Prior to 31-Oct-2014 nominal (reduced) flow rate was ~12.5 gpm Flow rate experienced a step function reduction after RAW skid filter changes 2 water headers of the 4 operational headers became plugged 2/02/15Kris E. Anderson | Status of BNB Horn Chargeout3

Brief History of Horn BNB-2 Efforts to unplug 2 water headers starting in December 2014 were unsuccessful 1 water header completely plugged 1 water header 2/3 plugged 2/02/15Kris E. Horn Changeout Issues Need to qualify spare horn BNB-3 as a suitable spare –Last pulse tested at MI-12 April 26, 2006 –Need to pulse test to qualify leak-tight seals, water headers, and measure for correct pulse characteristics and water flow A major issue with the horn changeout is the control and mitigation efforts to deal with the Be 7 contamination in the horn cave, decay pipe, and absorber regions We could be faced with inoperable or marginally functioning horn support positioning adjusters—this is a potential big problem Need to upgrade horn RAW skid for better filtering and instrumentation 2/02/15Kris E. Horn Box Support Adjusters-MARS Analysis to Quantify Screw Adjusters w/ Rad-Hard Grease Suitability 2/02/15Kris E. Anderson | Status of BNB Horn Chargeout9 Rad-hard grease acceptable to 3E9 Rads (gamma irradiation) This grease was not used on current screw jacks as lubricant MARS analysis conducted by A. Leveling calculates peak grease dose of 3.6E8 Rad/yr Grease rating based upon gammas, neutrons worse by 10x

Schedule Overview Baseline schedule estimates beam-ready sometime the week of April 7, 2015 –Assumes no issues with horn support adjusters –Assumes horn test duration of ~1 week (1M pulses) If we have to R&R baseplate support adjusters and possibly rail guides for Hillman rollers we will have to fabricate a cask for transporting the failed hardware and fabricate a new adjuster platform– might require an additional 2 to 4 weeks (we will look at more detailed schedule based upon adjuster test to be conducted February 2) 2/02/15Kris E.
