Quieter Pavement in Washington Mia Waters Washington State Department of Transportation TRB ADC40, Transportation Related Noise & Vibration Williamsburg, VA July 12, 2006

What are we testing for? Pavement – twice per year (before & after winter driving season)  Smoothness  Cracking/Raveling  Longevity/Durability  Cost/Benefit Noise – monthly as appropriate for 1 st year (reassess frequency w/in the year)  Tire/Pavement with Onboard Sound Intensity  Resident experience with Wayside/Pass-by  Driver experience with in-vehicle meter

What to watch in Washington…  Studded tires  Ground temperatures for installation of open graded rubberized asphalt  Freeze/thaw for trapped water in open graded asphalt  Tire pressures on air pockets for open graded asphalt  Plugging/vacuuming  Heavy traffic wear  Changes to water run-off

Asphalt Related Quieter Pavement Test Sections in Washington State (2006) RoadwayProject Location Test Section Comparisons Existing Pavement Type Expected Knowledge Gained I 90Argonne Rd to Sullivan Rd (Spokane) Constructed in 2004  Carpet drag  Transverse tining New concreteNoise and pavement durability in lower volume traffic with high studded tire use. I 5Federal Way to 317th Street HOV Direct Access Constructed in 2005  Carpet drag  Transverse tining New concreteNoise and pavement durability in high traffic environment. I 5Pierce County Line to Tukwila Constructed in 2006  Carpet drag  Longitudinal tining  Transverse tining New concreteNoise and pavement durability in high traffic environment. I 552 nd Avenue West to SR-526 (southbound only) “Lynnwood Test Section” Construction in 2006  OGFC-AR (~¾ mile)  OGFC-SBS (~¾ mile)  HMA (remaining project length) Hot mix asphalt pavement Noise and pavement durability of two types of asphalt quieter pavement compared to standard asphalt in high traffic environment (including truck traffic).

RoadwayProject Location Test Section Comparisons Existing Pavement Type Expected Knowledge Gained SR 520Test section location to be determined (east and west bound) Construction in 2007  OGFC-AR (~¾ mile)  OGFC-SBS (~¾ mile)  HMA (~¾ mile) Hot mix asphalt pavement Noise and pavement durability of two types of asphalt quieter pavement compared to standard asphalt for wayside homes because it covers both directions of traffic. I 405112 th Avenue SE to SE 8 th Street (north and south bound) Construction in 2008- 2009  OGFC-AR (~1 mile)  OGFC-SBS (~1 mile)  HMA (~1 mile)  Diamond ground concrete Hot mix asphalt and concrete pavement Pavement durability of two types of asphalt quieter pavement overlaid on concrete pavement and noise durability of a diamond ground concrete surface Asphalt Related Quieter Pavement Test Sections in Washington State (2006)
