11 CONCEPTS OF SUSTAINABILITY FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENTS Longevity, increase service life Minimize long-term environmental effects  Reduced greenhouse emissions (e.g., CO2)  Reduced use of raw materials  Recycled asphalt pavements  Increased use of recycled materials  Increased use of industrial by-products  Crumb (tire) rubber modified asphalt

12 THE PREMISE: REDUCE THE IMPACT AT THE PRODUCTION LEVEL Less energy used during production = Less impact on the environment

13 RECYCLING EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENTS Every year, about 100 million tons of pavement material is reclaimed, and about 95 percent of the total is returned to use in roads and highways. This makes asphalt pavement America’s most recycled material.

14 CRUMB RUBBER MODIFIED HMA PAVEMENTS Ground tire rubber + asphalt + aggregates Asphalt rubber is the largest single market for ground rubber in the United States,  consuming an estimated 220 million pounds, or approximately 12 million tires annually. 14

17 DEFLECTION -How much something changes when a force (or load) is applied to it -Goal for engineers: minimize deflection on pavement

18 DEFLECTION How do you measure it? SENSORS! One type of sensor: Piezoelectric Film Transducer as a Sensor Wires connected to piezo

19 YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE APPLY what you have learned about sustainability in asphalt design to DESIGN, BUILD, and TEST a sample of pavement

20 YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 1)GOAL: LEAST amount of deflection (measured with piezo and oscilloscope) 2)COST: LEAST amount of cost (you will calculate this) 3)TIME: Must finish production and testing before the end of this session 4)MATERIALS: You can only use what is provided for your group

21 1)Use the JB Weld glue to glue the piezo onto the top layer FIRST (it takes about 10 min to dry) 2)You can mix any supply with any other supply. 3)Make sure to compact their layers 4)Water can be added to any layer, but you do not want it to “float” 5)The Geogrid is generally used after the first layer YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE: HELPFUL HINTS
