Why StreetBondSR? Pavement surfaces comprise roughly 30-40% of the urban footprint and are a leading cause of Urban Heat Island Effect. StreetBondSR facilitates Urban Heat Island mitigation by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by the pavement surface. StreetBondSR can contribute LEED® credits and is an ideal solution for green hardscape & parking lot design Making Asphalt Beautiful
64
Urban Heat Island – What is it?
Why do we want cooler pavements, because of the Heat Island Effect. Urban heat islands are metropolitan areas where the temperature is higher than in the surrounding rural areas (by 5-6 degrees). This effect is specially evident at night On warm summer days, the air in a city can be 6-8°F hotter than its surrounding areas. 1.What Are Urban Heat Islands? Many urban and suburban areas experience elevated temperatures compared to their outlying rural surroundings; this difference in temperature is what constitutes an urban heat island. The annual mean air temperature of a city with one million or more people can be 1.8 to 5.4°F (1 to 3°C) warmer than its surroundings,1 and on a clear, calm night, this temperature difference can be as much as 22°F (12°C).2 Even smaller cities and towns will produce heat islands, though the effect often decreases as city size decreases.
65
Pavements absorb more heat than they emit during the day
At night pavements continue to emit the heat absorbed during the day.
66
Reducing Heat Island Reduces Energy Consumption
40% of total US energy consumption come for heating, lighting and cooling buildings All SUVs in US use only 3% Presenter Please read slide Making Asphalt Beautiful
67
Reducing Heat Island Reduces Energy Consumption
“If an interior is kept at 75°F and the external temperature is reduced from 105°F to 95°F by heat island mitigation, the air conditioning bill can be reduced by 33%” Its Not Cool to be in Houston (image – thermal image: Houston) Ronald L. Sass Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Rice University Houston, TX 77005 How can we affect the quality of life by mitigating the Houston heat island? To summarize, the various tools that can be employed to cool Houston are (1) planting trees in strategic locations; (2) using highly reflecting urban surfaces such as roofs, streets, and parking lots; (3) developing smart residential and commercial areas with appropriately placed green spaces Together these techniques could reduce the heat load of the city by several kWhr/m2/day and reduce the temperature by as much as 10 or 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The energy requirement and subsequent cost for air conditioning our living spaces increase directly proportional to the difference in temperature between the building or automobile interior and the outside. If the interior is kept at 75°F and the external temperature is reduced from 105°F to 95°F by heat island mitigation, the air conditioning bill can be reduced by 33%. This is a substantial economic saving as well as a reduction in the overall energy requirement of the city. Making Asphalt Beautiful Houston Heat Island Strategy

StreetBondSR can contribute LEED® credits and is an ideal solution for green hardscape & parking lot design
71
Accepted benchmark in North America for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Based on a system of prerequisites and credits, LEED® projects are rated for sustainable materials and building practices.
72
Achieving LEED® Credit by Reducing Heat Island Effect
StreetBondSR™ can contribute LEED® credits under the following categories: Sustainable Sites (SSc7.1) – Heat Island Effect – Non-Roof Green Neighborhood Development – Green Infrastructure and Buildings – Heat Island Reduction (GIB Credit 9)

3. Use paving materials with an SRI of at least 29.
The SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) is a measure of a hardscape surface’s ability to reflect solar heat. Standard black is 0 and standard white is 100. StreetBondSR colors have an SRI greater than 29 and therefore qualify for the LEED® program under Section SS Credit 7.1 Heat Island Effect: Non-Roof. For more information go to
